Description

This specialist primary phase course is aimed specifically at supporting school staff who are poolside & will be working alongside a fully qualified swimming instructor. It is aimed at increasing knowledge and skills to be able to support and promote pupils’ learning and progress poolside.

This course aligns with the guidance produced by Swim England and The Swim Group for Curricular Swimming and Water Safety as well as other national organisations guidance. It is part of our continued mission to ensure all pupils experience high-quality PE and make progress in line with their full potential. We are also committed to helping schools achieve 100% of pupils being able to swim above and beyond the recommended minimum, using recognisable strokes and being able to make a safe self-rescue across a range of aquatic scenarios.

Recognising the requirements of the PE Premium funding and the limited focus on PE during Initial Teacher Training (ITT); the course will cover teaching approaches and practical application of knowledge. How to encourage and support pupils’ learning across the recognised strokes using a framework to provide feedback and teaching points. This course will help staff who are poolside to make a greater impact upon learning, enjoyment and confidence. It could help staff working with a qualified instructor supporting intervention groups for example as part of PE and sport premium action planning.

 Learning Outcomes:

Learners will be able to:

  • be effective and contribute to safe lessons,
  • increase pupil engagement & participation
  • integrate wider learning
  • demonstrate an understanding of what pupils should know, understand and be able to do in swimming,
  • demonstrate how to achieve effective strokes, including breathing
  • organise, manage and lead small groups of pupils under the direction of the qualified swimming instructor in shallow water
  • assess pupil progress and plan ‘next steps’ with swimming instructor

Designed to improve outcomes for pupils and levels of competence and confidence in staff this course is ideally placed to help schools meet the requirements of the PE and sport premium funding. It also builds resilience and capacity within the school staff making sustainability of developments more likely – a key demand of the conditions of grant for PE and sport premium funding.

This course can be delivered in person at your school (recommended) where all staff who support and attend curriculum swimming sessions can attend and benefit from the CPD. £350 plus travel @50p/mile.

This course can be delivered via ZOOM making it accessible and affordable without compromising content or outcomes. Like many of our CPD events it can be booked as a cluster, MAT or Federation to best meet YOUR needs. Contact us to discuss your needs. £350

This course is delivered as a three-hour module supported by resources for schools to utilise. It is not a qualification, nor does it qualify staff to teach swimming as an instructor. It is aimed at supporting staff members who are poolside during curricular swimming lessons to help promote pupils learning, build confidence and make more progress. Staff would work under the guidance of the Qualified Swimming Instructor / Teacher allowing a small group to be supported to make greater progress due to more contact time, engagement and participation.
